NIST Open Industrial Digital Ecosystem Summit and OAGi Symposium
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.

Industrial and manufacturing enterprises seek digital transformations in order to gain breakthroughs in productivity and agility. But how can this best be accomplished and at what costs?
Ideally, information in the digital ecosystem of an industrial and manufacturing enterprise should be transparent and rapidly accessible from the shop floor to the top floor to enable a productive transformation. Repeatable, scalable and sustainable data acquisition methods is necessary to lower the implementation costs regardless of software vendors.  Do you want to learn more and share ideas about how this could be done better, more efficiently, and more cost effectively using techniques other than the traditional, costly systems integration and what role should standards play and what the security implications are?
OAGi and MIMOSA both have long standardization histories focused in different, complementary domains.  OAGi covers enterprise business process standardization, while MIMOSA has taken a leading role in standards-based interoperability, with a focus on asset life-cycle information management. NIST conducts research and development on novel methods and tools, test cases, and testing tools that reduce risk of developing, using, and adopting standards, which is making standards-based interoperability a more realistic proposition. NIST, OAGi, and MIMOSA have initiated a cross-standard, cross-industry collaboration to help accelerate digital transformation using supplier-neutral open standards and interoperability.
The NIST Open Industrial Digital Ecosystems Summit brings together industry practitioners and thought leaders from owner/operators, standard development organizations, research institutes, and industry solution suppliers to share their desires, successes and obstacles in the new era of digital transformation journey. An objective of this year event is to discuss the feasibility of supplier neutral, out-of-the-box, standards-based interoperability, and to make a strategic research and development plan to drive the industry toward more cost-effective interoperable solutions for standardized, high-priority industry use cases.

Local Governments and the Cloud: Briefing and Panel Discussion
TO ATTEND THIS EVENT YOU MUST RSVP SEPARATELY.
Many government agencies are moving into the cloud with the intent to provide critical IT operations in an efficient and secure manner with the ultimate goal of transforming government IT service delivery.
While this all sounds good, it is not as simple as that for government agencies. Moving to the cloud is often promoted as an opportunity to save money and free-up resources to address other government IT services. Is that the case? And, governments are under the microscope when it comes to security: Government maintains citizen information and provides mission critical services that impact the public's safety. Any failure on either of these can have a negative impact on the community's trust in government.
The Public Technology Institute, as part of DC CloudWeek, is convening Local Governments and the Cloud: Briefing and Panel Discussion. City and county IT executives and industry experts will share how the cloud can impact government IT today and will have even more of an impact on local government services in the years to come.
This event is free; to attend the event in person (seating is limited), register here
This event is also being presented virtually via Zoom. To attend the virtual event register here.

Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator Certification
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.

Computer forensics is the application of computer investigation and analysis techniques in the interests of determining potential legal evidence. Evidence might be sought in a wide range of computer crimes or misuse, including but not limited to; theft of trade secrets, theft of or destruction of intellectual property, and fraud. Computer forensic investigators can draw from an array of methods for discovering data that resides in a computer system, or recovering deleted, encrypted, or damaged file information.
The CHFI course will give participants the necessary skills to identify an intruder’s footprints and to properly gather the necessary evidence to prosecute. Many of today’s top tools of the forensic trade will be taught during this course, including software, hardware and specialized techniques. It is no longer a matter of “will your organization be comprised (hacked)?” but, rather, “when?” Today’s battle between corporations, governments, and countries are no longer fought only in the typical arenas of boardrooms or battlefields using physical force. Now, the battlefield starts in the technical realm, which ties into most every facet of modern day life. If you or your organization requires the knowledge or skills to identify, track, and prosecute the cybercriminal, then this is the course for you.

Rebalancing Cybersecurity Imperatives: Patching the Social Layer
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.
This event is sponsored by IWP’s Cyber Intelligence Initiative.
About the Lecture: The social layer where civil society, including commercial and academic interaction, takes place is the most vulnerable one of the three commonly-accepted layers of cyberspace. Worse still, emphasis by technical experts on physical and logical layer security has lulled civil society into a dangerous torpor that conflates information transmission reliability with reliable information. This has been exploited by criminals, adversarial states such as Russia, and hostile non-state actors such as the Islamic State. This presentation will explore the danger of an overly-narrow conception of cybersecurity by governments and practitioners and recommends an urgent focus on the social layer toward a holistic rebalancing of cybersecurity. It offers a set of recommendations to help civil society secure itself in cyberspace.
About the Speaker: Dr. David Gioe is History Fellow for the U.S. Army Cyber Institute at West Point, where he is also Assistant Professor of History at the U.S. Military Academy. David is Director of Studies for the Cambridge Security Initiative and co-convener of its International Security and Intelligence program. He earned a B.A. in History and Social Science from Wheaton College, an M.A. from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, and a Ph.D. in Politics and International Studies from the University of Cambridge. He also holds a graduate certificate in Strategic Studies from U.S. Naval War College. Dr. Gioe’s scholarship and analysis has appeared in numerous outlets. He co-edited a 50th Anniversary volume on the Cuban Missile Crisis, and a co-authored history of the CIA is forthcoming. Before starting his academic career, Dr. Gioe was an intelligence officer, beginning with appointment in 2001 as a Presidential Management Fellow in the FBI National Security Division. He transferred to CIA and served multiple overseas tours as an operations officer in the Middle East and Europe. He retains his commission as a senior officer in the Navy Reserve and is assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Defense Attaché Service.

Data & Great Power Competition
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.
Data and online connectivity are increasingly crucial drivers of the global economy. But there is tremendous debate and uncertainty over the way in which governments should interact with the private sector through data policy and law, or data governance.

Emerging data governance regimes around the world will not only have sweeping economic consequences, but also geopolitical impacts as countries jostle for influence in setting rules for new data-intensive technologies, including artificial intelligence (A.I.), 5G wireless networks, the internet of things (IoT), and cloud technologies. There are open questions about how data governance should balance security, competitiveness, and privacy. A global patchwork of rules for how data is shared across borders will also shape trade and investment, technological development, and access to data around the world.

Leverage VMware and AWS to Simplify your Hybrid IT Operations
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.

State and local governments are looking to the cloud for ways to improve services for and with citizens through open data initiatives, public safety modernization, education reform, citizen service improvements, and infrastructure programs. However, data centers remain critical to IT operations for many state and local governments, and a majority of workloads, such as legacy business applications and sensitive data, live on-premises. Many agencies believe that moving their applications and workloads to the cloud requires new tools, skills, and processes, all of which can be time-consuming and costly.

VMware Cloud on AWS, an integrated cloud offering jointly developed by AWS and VMware, enables government agencies to overcome these challenges by bringing your VMware Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC)-based workloads to AWS, delivered as an on-demand service. State and local governments can simplify IT operations with a hybrid solution using the same VMware technologies across on-premise data centers and on the AWS Cloud without having to purchase any new or custom hardware, rewrite applications, or modify operating models. If you are looking to increase agility, reduce costs, and focus on core citizen initiatives instead of data center management, VMware Cloud on AWS can help.

In this session, you will learn how your agency can benefit from a hybrid IT solution:
  • Increased velocity of migrations to the AWS Cloud
  • Leverage of existing investments in VMware
  • Increased availability and security of running data in AWS
  • Use of the VMware platform as a single pane of glass for managing servers
  • Minimal training to equip existing VMware staff to support the new solution
  • Integrated AWS services including compute, storage, databases and security

Want to learn how your peers are using VMware Cloud on AWS in their agency? Read how the State of Louisiana plans to use VMware Cloud on AWS as part of a public cloud-first initiative.

Data Integration and Analytics: How to Deliver More Valuable Insights in the DoD
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.
Arming senior DoD leaders with visibility and insights derived from analytics is a top priority for FY 2019. Budget has been allocated for numerous IT modernization projects designed to consolidate data storage systems, making information readily accessible for analysis, but accomplishing this objective requires an agile strategy and coordination across multiple organizations.
Data analytics can provide military leaders with the intelligence needed to quickly react to any given situation, but to be most effective, it requires access to accurate and current data from hundreds or thousands of data collection points. This is a significant challenge across the DoD: integrating massive volumes of data quickly and efficiently to achieve insights, make decisions and take actions.
This webinar will address how a strategy of data integration is the foundation for a robust analytics program and provide actionable insights in real-time or near real-time to help move integration and analytics projects forward.

Gaining a Competitive Advantage Through Cyber, Data, & Personnel Security
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.

Cybersecurity and protection of sensitive data from external and insider threats are critical for federal contractors across all industries and in all market positions. Each significant data breach or cyber incident and corresponding legislative and regulatory initiatives confirm that cyber, data, and personnel security will continue to dominate the federal contracting landscape.

In this environment, contractors need to move beyond viewing compliance as a cost center. Your compliance posture presents a significant opportunity to gain (or lose) a competitive advantage in the pursuit of federal prime contracts and subcontracts. Indeed, we are seeing cyber, data, and personnel security regularly impact contractors in entering into teaming arrangements, proposal writing, award decisions, protests, hiring and employee training, and mergers and acquisitions.

PilieroMazza’s Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, and Personnel Security Group are pleased to present this forum to bring together perspectives from leading practitioners to discuss how cybersecurity, supply chain risk management, data rights, and personnel security are shaping the competitive landscape for federal prime contracts and subcontracts. Panel presentations will provide insights and strategies to help contractors gain a competitive advantage through discussions of:
  • How cybersecurity is impacting award decisions and teaming for federal contracts
  • Protecting your data rights
  • Cybersecurity in due diligence and mergers and acquisitions
  • Developing a robust insider threat program and other risk mitigation strategies

Who Should Attend

This conference is specifically designed for professionals in the government contracting sector -- from all industries -- who manage cybersecurity, data rights, and personnel security for their organizations, including business owners and C-suite executives, and technology and human resource professionals.

Agenda - Panel Discussions

Cybersecurity as a Competitive Advantage
This panel will encourage contractors to stop viewing cybersecurity compliance as merely a cost center and instead see it as a real opportunity to gain (or lose) a competitive advantage in winning federal prime contracts and subcontracts. The large contractor panelists will share real-world insights on what vendors and subcontractors need to demonstrate in terms of cybersecurity compliance to get on teams and do work with their firms.  The small business panelist will share the view from the other side, on how they gained a competitive edge through cyber/data/personnel security.  The panelists will also forecast where they think contractors need to focus their cyber compliance efforts to best position themselves to win work.

Protecting Data Rights and Cybersecurity in M&A Transactions
This panel will discuss what contractors need to do to protect their data rights/IP and how both cyber and data rights are increasingly affecting mergers and acquisitions for federal contractors. The panelists will discuss real-world examples of strategies contractors can use to protect data rights and prepare for how cybersecurity and data rights can impact due diligence and closing a transaction.

Managing Insider Threats and Other Risk Mitigation Strategies
Developing a robust insider threat program is critical for many federal contractors. This panel will discuss the keys to a successful insider threat program and the importance of educating and training your personnel. This panel will also discuss other strategies to manage the risk of cyber, data, and personnel security compliance.

Emerging Science Workshop; Emerging Advances in Artificial Intelligence
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.

Artificial intelligence (AI), or the ability of computer algorithms to carry out “smart” tasks, is transforming many aspects of modern life. These tools are beginning to be applied to environmental health in areas such as characterizing sources of pollution, predicting chemical hazards and toxicity, estimating human exposures, and identifying health outcomes. However, there are questions about the transparency, reproducibility, and interpretability of the algorithms. This meeting will discuss different types of AI that can be applied to environmental health.
Held in Washington D.C. and webcast live, this workshop organized by the standing committee on the Use of Emerging Science for Environmental Health Decisions will provide an overview of AI and discuss the differences between AI and other mathematical and statistical models. The workshop will also have interactive discussions about the potential promise and perils related to the use of AI predictions for environmental health decisions.

Subsurface Data and Machine Learning
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.
Collection and analysis of data on the contents and structure of the Earth’s subsurface have been important throughout U.S. history for the identification, development, and stewardship of the nation’s energy, mineral, and water resources, and for monitoring and mitigating potential natural and environmental hazards. However, ownership and development of these datasets are dispersed across private industry, government, academic researchers, and others, each with different use cases and approaches to data collection and processing. The lack of data sharing and common data collection, curation, and analysis standards presents a serious barrier to improved scientific understanding of the subsurface.
Development of advanced data analyses such as machine learning and artificial intelligence further open the opportunities for examining rich subsurface datasets to improve scientific and public understanding of the subsurface and to support development, stewardship, and management of subsurface resources in an economically and environmentally sound way. Our discussion will focus on progress, challenges, and opportunities in machine learning and artificial intelligence applied to subsurface datasets.

Enterprise Architecture for the AI Era
PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.

We are excited to announce IBM AI Washington DC’s next meetup on Thursday, June 6th from 1-3 pm in downtown Washington DC. The event will be held at Hill Country Barbecue on 7th and D, just a few blocks from the National Mall. The topic of this meetup is “Enterprise Architecture for the AI Era” and will include a brief architecture overview followed by a panel discussion about how organizations can develop an IT strategy to fully exploit artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning.

According to a McKinsey report published in July 2018, although “45 percent of executives who have yet to invest in AI fear falling behind competitively,” only approximately 10 percent of companies have tried to diffuse AI across the enterprise. McKinsey observes that the success of AI adoption is largely dependent on an organization’s digital base: “AI adopters can’t flourish without a solid base of core and advanced digital technologies.” Underpinning this digital base and enabling companies to become AI-ready is a strategically-planned infrastructure that provides the efficiency and scalability required for AI applications and workloads.
Read the full report at https://mck.co/2uULEr3.

So, how can organizations best position themselves to adopt and diffuse AI to improve their business? This meetup will cover how to develop this digital base, and more specifically, how to design an infrastructure that allow users to take full advantage of artificial intelligence.

The agenda for this meetup includes:
1. Opening remarks by Jim Monroe, manager of the IBM AI Washington DC Meetup
2. A high-level infrastructure overview for AI workloads: Aaron Potler
3. Panel discussion about AI infrastructure from thought leadership. The panel will include:
a. Dr. Wayne Chung, Director of AI at Federal Bureau of Investigation
b. Aaron Potler, IBM US Federal Distinguished Engineer
c. Proshanta Saha, IBM Cognitive Solutions Architect
d. Jane Yu, IBM AI / ML Solutions, Federal Systems
e. James Nash (Moderator), IBM Washington Systems Center POWER Systems Specialist

Panelists will be prepared in advance with questions. If you have a specific question you would like to have answered, please reply to this broadcast so it can be included in the moderator questions.

Hope to see you all there to:
• learn from thought leaders about how organizations can prepare for and leverage AI to glean insights about their business
• ask questions about how organizations can plan infrastructure strategically to take advantage of AI, ML and DL
• share some of your AI experience with other meetup members

Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday, June 6th from 1-3 pm at 410 7th St NW, Washington, DC 20004. The restaurant is metro accessible from Metro Center (blue, orange, red, silver lines) and Gallery Place (green, red, yellow lines). Street and garage parking close to the venue are also options for attendees driving to the event.

Please RSVP to the event if you plan to attend and feel free to reach out with any questions, as well as questions for our panelists. Hope to see you all there!

PLEASE RSVP SEPARATELY HERE.
Achieving cloud compliance in a given industry requires a thorough, risk-based approach. And it's possible with the right strategy. It is important to be aware—and cautious—of the way data protection laws vary between states, countries, and government bodies.

In healthcare, HITRUST and HIPAA cloud compliance is highly desirable as most payers will only work with HITRUST certified vendors today. Analysts predict the majority of providers will follow suit within two years. Earning certifications like HIPAA Compliance on Amazon Web Service (AWS) can give your organization a competitive edge.

Learn how to earn AWS compliance certifications easily with the security strategies and best practices covered in this webinar. CloudCheckr Product Marketing Manager Todd Bernhard, and Cloudticity Founder and CEO Gerry Miller, discuss ways to leverage technology, automation, and cloud economics to achieve compliance while reducing costs and ongoing maintenance requirements.
